THE LAKE DISTRICT

Ever since the Romantic poets arrived in the 19th century, its postcard panorama of craggy hilltops, mountain tarns and glittering lakes has been stirring the imaginations of visitors.

Since 2017 it has also been a Unesco World Heritage Site, in recognition of its unique hill-farming culture.

Among the many writers who found inspiration here were William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Arthur Ransome and, of course, Beatrix Potter, a lifelong lover of the Lakes.

We spend the morning at leisure in Kendal. The town’s cottages, mansions and old traces of industry are built from rusticated limestone with a solemn grey tone, earning Kendal the nickname Auld Grey Town.

Of course, Kendal will forever be synonymous in many people's minds with its famous mint cake, a staple item in the nation's hiking packs ever since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay munched it during their ascent of Everest in 1953 - don't forget to get yours!

And keep an eye out for 'Postman Pat' -John Cunliffe's books were based on the former post office at Greenside.

The Ruskin Museum

AFter our visit to Kendal we head on a scenic drive to Coniston Water.

Take a little time to visit the Ruskin Museum, (entry fee applies) an award-winning Cabinet of Curiosities which tells the Story of Coniston from the first Stone Age fell-walkers, who made and traded stone axes, to the Jet Era when the 1950s speed ace Donald Campbell used Coniston Water as Bluebird K7’s race-track.

The Cumbria Grand Hotel

THE CUMBRIA GRAND HOTEL, Grange-Over-Sands

Built in 1880, and set in 20 acres of private gardens and woodland overlooking Morecambe Bay the charming Victorian Cumbria Grand Hotel in Grange-Over-Sands is only six miles from the majestic Lake Windermere.

Until the Victorian era, this was a small and fairly isolated fishing village. This changed when the railroad reached the region in the 1850s, turning Grange-over-Sands into a popular seaside destination for holidaymakers.
