Constable Country is most celebrated for its artistic links. The most wellknown of which is the famous painter John Constable who was born in the village of East Bergholt in 1776. The stunning scenery on and around the River Stour are thought to have influenced much of his work in this area.
The village of East Bergholt is where Constable was born and where The church of St. Mary the Virgin (pictured above) has the famous bell Cage in it’s church yard, along with the graves of John Constable’s parents and Willy Lott. Dedham is one of the most attractive villages in Essex, and the association with John Constable is particularly close. The historic church of St Mary the Virgin dominates the High Street and features in several of Constable’s paintings.
